Pretty Boys: The Making

Posted by: sparkasia on: June 15, 2008

This is not another article written to satisfy our fan girlish fantasies over our favorite dream boys but to feed you with information as to how these pretty boys were molded to hit stardom.

Multiple ear piercing, dyed and spiked long hair, distinctive and flashy outfits, and of course a cool character are all superficial parts of the entire package of the production. This is an Asian mark of a music and television icon.

But how did they come up with all these?

Source of manufacturing these pretty images is Johnny’s Entertainment otherwise known as Johnny’s Jimusho. Thanks to him for bringing us a remarkable brand of entertainment. He is the one responsible for grooming future stars.

The Johnny’s production style has often been likened to a factory. They scout young boys for looks and character, then putting them through intensive training that includes grooming, public speaking, dance, singing, acting, gymnastics and sometimes more esoteric skills. – nippop.com

The younger members often dance backup to senior performers. Their seniors not only sing and dance but were really trained so that the most successful “Johnny” could endorse products, act as leading stars both on film and TV.
American composer Joey Carbone says Kitagawa’s genius lies in finding someone at a young age, and imagining what they might look like a few years later.

As a businessman, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Johnny because, in a sense, he’s more creative than his artists. His creativity is to put these acts together.

This is from an article I got to read from neomarxisme blog:

These pretty boys that we all adore are tightly controlled by their management who has total monopoly of over Japan’s entire “good-looking boy idol group” market.

The members are under strict contracts, and their public images are carefully groomed. Generally they aspire to be the handsome boy next door. As a general rule, the members do not publicly have girlfriends, as the boys are of greater interest to fans when they are “available”. Akanishi Jin of Kat`tun allegedly knocked up two teenagers and was sent to the U.S. as a punishment but the management made it appeared that he went to the states to study English.

The entertainment world in reality is not much of an ideal world for youngsters who do not have enough knowledge of what’s truly going on with the world. We have to face what is real, and the real thing is that, all of these are a product of dreams and fantasies. It’s not a fantasy if all of these aren’t good.

Reality is something that snaps us out of something obscure, but then, I didn’t post all this to discourage my readers but to let them be informed about the real thing.
